Dress Code for Executive Leaders by Monique Daigneault

Although the old adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is definitely a saying we should keep in mind when meeting or dealing with others, there is often judgment involved, even if we may not verbally acknowledge it. We should also keep in mind that not everyone will show us the same courtesy. Research has consistently shown that during the initial seven seconds of an encounter, people form an opinion about you. So it’s important to not only make a good first impression, but also to establish yourself as the successful person you are.
People who have a lot of potential but don’t seem or sound like leaders are often passed over for opportunities to flourish if they’re not dressed a certain way. Far too often, people prefer to perceive success that has already been attained rather than a work in progress. Coco Chanel once said, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” You’ll have to dress the part if you want to project competence and success.
We all know how certain clothes can make us feel a particular way – beautiful, prepared, tall, powerful, frumpy, or even uncomfortable – so wearing clothes and accessories that you love can give you a sense of empowerment and make you feel confident and ready to take on the day.
Wearing certain items can send strong nonverbal cues about your position, personality, and even your line of work, so keep in mind that clean and pressed clothing makes a huge impression on any event, no matter what the occasion.
Benefits of Having a Dress Code
Those who dress better often have more confidence and are seen as being an organized and detail-oriented individual. Even more importantly, however, those who dress a certain way are seen as leaders and are approached for assistance more frequently than those who don’t. Well-chosen, polished attire is a strategic investment in making a professional impact.
Leaders who are dressed well serve as a visual representation of their competence and their business. A well-groomed, professional appearance enhances credibility, instilling confidence in both team members and stakeholders. In fact, the right attire can command respect and authority; it establishes a visual hierarchy that aligns with leadership roles, fostering a sense of order and direction within a team.
Leaders serve as ambassadors for their organizations, so a polished appearance contributes to a positive professional image, which can be particularly crucial in client meetings, negotiations, and networking events. It is a strategic tool that goes beyond aesthetics, influencing perception, confidence, and the overall effectiveness of a leader in their professional endeavors.
Know Your Audience
Just because you may wear a power suit at the office doesn’t mean that that is always the appropriate outfit to wear at every event. Understanding not only where you will be, but who will be there and whyyou will be there is also critical. Casual and relaxed may be fine for one venue, while bold and trendy is fitting for another, and a parka may be needed for yet another.
As for accessories, flag pins are often worn at political gatherings, and there are those who traditionally wear a statement piece, which make their appearance notable, although being kitschy is usually frowned upon.
Makeup
Wearing makeup or going without has its own school of thought, with many a female leader believing she will be seen as unprofessional without being fully made up. This should be a personal decision, but being relatively consistent is probably wise, whatever she decides.
What’s Your Dress Code?
Unfortunately, you will be judged on your looks long before someone will judge your words or actions. Since dressing well can elevate a leader’s self-confidence, concentrate on that while deciding on a wardrobe. If you are an executive leader and need guidance on dressing like the person you want to be so the success you desire will follow or be more evident, I’d love to have a chat about how having a dress code can help you reach your goals.
